The Civil Rights Act of 1875

John J. Ingalls

(December 29, 1833 — August 16, 1900) Ingalls was a lawyer, judge, and politician. John Ingalls was born in Essex County, Massachusetts and stayed in Massachusetts until he moved to Kansas in 1858. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1857. After moving to Kansas, Ingalls served as a member of the State constitutional convention in 1859, and secretary of the Territorial Council in 1860. After the Civil War, he served in the State Senate. Ingalls was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1891. After retiring from Congress, Ingalls pursued interests in journalism, literature, and farming until his death.
