The Civil Rights Act of 1875

William Sprague

(3 November, 1799-- 19 October, 1856) Sprague was an American politician. Born in Cranston, R.I., Sprague was a the speaker of the State house of representatives from 1832 to 1835. Sprague was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fourth Congress and was elected as governor of Rhode Island from 1838 to 1839. Afterwards, Sprague was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Nathan F. Dixon.
