The Civil Rights Act of 1875

John S. Hager

(March 12, 1818 — March 19, 1890) Hager was a lawyer, miner, and public servant. John Hager was born in Morris County, New Jersey and moved to California in 1849, after completing his studies at the College of New Jersey. While in California, he practiced law and engaged in mining. Additionally, he served as a member of the State constitutional convention (1849), and was elected as a State district judge from 1855 to 1861. He was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-Third Congress. He was elected to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Eugene Casserly. He served in the United States Senate from December 23, 1873 to March 3, 1875.
