The Civil Rights Act of 1875

William H. Clagett

(September 21, 1838 — August 3, 1901) Clagett was an American politician and lawyer. William Clagett was born in Prince George’s County, Maryland and moved to Iowa in 1850. After studying law in Albany, New York, Clagett was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Iowa from 1858 to 1861. In 1861, he relocated to Carson City, Nevada, where he served as a member of the Territorial House of Representatives (1862-1863), and after the Territory obtained Statehood, he served as a member of the State House of Representatives from 1864 to 1865. He moved to the Montana Territory and was elected as a Republican to represent the Territory for the Forty-Second Congress from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873.
