William Terry

(August 14, 1824 — September 5, 1888) William Terry was a teacher, politician, and lawyer. Terry was born in Amherst County, Virginia in 1824. He graduated from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1848, after which he taught school and studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1851 and practiced law, as well as worked in the newspaper industry. During the Civil War, Terry enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as a lieutenant, and later as a major and brigadier general. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873. Terry died of drowning while trying to ford Reed Creek in Virginia.
