During the Civil War, he briefly served in the Confederate Army, but was sent home because of poor health. Beck was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of Thomas Speer. After an unsuccessful renomination to the Forty-Third Congress, he returned to Georgia and acted as judge of the city court of Griffin until his death in 1898.
