The Civil Rights Act of 1875

Lionel A. Sheldon

(August 30, 1828 — January 17, 1917) Sheldon was an American politician and lawyer. Lionel Sheldon was born in Otsego County, New York and moved to Louisiana after the Civil War. He graduated from Fowler Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1853. He enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War and served as a lieutenant colonel and colonel. After settling in Louisiana, Sheldon practiced law until he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1869. He was elected as a Republican to the Forty-First, Forty-Second, and Forty-Third Congresses from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1875.
