The Civil Rights Act of 1875

Joseph H. Lewis

(October 29, 1824 — July 6, 1904) Lewis was a politician, judge, and lawyer. Joseph Horace Lewis was born in Glasgow, Kentucky in 1824. He graduated from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky in 1843 and began studying law. Lewis was admitted to the bar in 1845 and practiced law in Glasgow. He enlisted in the Confederate army during the Civil War, and commanded the Sixth Kentucky Regiment. Lewis served in the State House of Representatives before the war from 1850 to 1855, and again after the war from 1869 to 1870. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Jacob Golladay. He served in the House from May 10, 1870 to March 3, 1873.
