Cornelius Cole

"(September 17, 1822 -- November 3, 1924) Cornelius Cole was a(n) lawyer, miner, public servant, soldier, and American politician. Cole was born in Lodi, Seneca County, New York and moved to California in 1849. Cornelius studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1848. He served as district attorney of Sacramento city and County (1859 - 1862) and member of the Republican National Committee (1856-1860). He served in the Civil War as a captain in the Union Army in 1863. Cornelius was elected as a Union Republican to the 38th congress, (March 4, 1863 - March 3, 1865) and was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate (March 4, 1867 - March 3, 1873). During his time in Congress he served as Chairmen on the Committee on Appropriations (42nd Congress).
