William Mitchell
(19 January, 1807 -- 11 September, 1865) Mitchell was an American lawyer, businessman, and politician. Born in Root, New York, Mitchell studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1836. After moving to Indiana, Mitchell practiced law and was appointed first postmaster of Kendallville in December 1836, serving until 1846. Mitchell also served as a member of the State House of Representatives in 1841. Mitchell was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-Seventh Congress serving from March 4, 1861 to March 3, 1863. After failing to successfully become reelected to the Thirty-Eighth Congress, Mitchell entered the cotton business. Mitchell died in Macon, Georgia in 1865.
