The Civil Rights Act of 1875

William R. Steele

(July 24, 1842 — November 30, 1901) Steele was an American politician and lawyer. William Steele was born in New York City, where he received an education, eventually studied law and was admitted to the bar. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and afterwards moved to the Territory of Wyoming. While in Wyoming, he served as a member of the Territorial Legislative Council (1871-1873). He resigned the Legislative Council when he was elected to represent the Territory in Congress. He served as a Democrat from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1877.
