The Civil Rights Act of 1875

Hiram L. Richmond

(May 17, 1810 — February 19, 1885) Hiram Lawton Richmond was student of medicine, lawyer, and politician. Richmond was born in Chautaugua, New York in 1810. After briefly studying medicine, he attended Alleghany College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, but did not graduate. Instead, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1838. Richmond originally associated with the Whig Party but changed his loyalties when the Republican Party was organized. He was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1875. After serving in Congress, Richmond continued practicing law and served on the board of trustees of Allegheny College until his death in 1885.
