Stewart L. Woodford
(September 3, 1835 — February 14, 1913) Stewart Lyndon Woodford was an American politician and lawyer. Woodford was born in New York City in 1835. In 1854, he graduated from Columbia College (now Columbia University), and was admitted to the bar in 1857. Woodford served in the Union Army during the Civil War and attained the ranks of lieutenant colonel and brigadier general. After the war, he was the first Union military commander in Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia. Woodford was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1873 to July 1, 1874, when he resigned.
