The Civil Rights Act of 1875

John J. Davis

(May 5, 1835 — March 19, 1916) Davis was an American politician and lawyer. John Davis was born in Clarksburg, Virginia (now in West Virginia). He studied law at, and graduated from, Lexington Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1856. He served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates (1861) and was a member of the convention to create the new state of West Virginia. When West Virginia became a state, Davis served was a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates (1869-1870). He was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-Second Congress and was reelected as an Independent Democrat to the Forty-Third Congress. He served in Congress from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1875.
