The Civil Rights Act of 1875

William S. Herndon

(November 27, 1835 — October 11, 1903) Herndon was a businessman, lawyer, and politician. William Smith Herndon was born in Georgia and moved to Texas in 1852. He studied law and graduated from McKenzie College in 1859, and was admitted to the bar in 1860. Herndon enlisted in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and served from 1861 to 1865, obtaining the rank of captain. After the war, he worked as a general solicitor for many railroad companies. Herndon was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1875. He returned to the railroad business after serving in Congress.
