The Civil Rights Act of 1875

Robert B. Elliott

(August 11, 1842 — August 9, 1884) Elliott was a journalist, lawyer, and politician. Robert Brown Elliott was born in England, where he attended public school. He immigrated to the United States and settled in Columbia, South Carolina. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in South Carolina. Elliott served as a member of the State House of Representatives from 1868 to 1870, and also served in the State constitutional convention in 1868. Additionally, Elliott was the assistant adjutant general of South Carolina from 1869 to 1871. He was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives and served in the Forty-Second and Forty-Third Congresses from March 4, 1871 until his resignation on November 1, 1874.
