Schuyler Colfax

(23 March, 1823 -- 13 January, 1885) Colfax was an American politician and was Vice President of the United States from 1869 to 1873. Born in New York City, Colfax moved to Indiana in 1836. Colfax was a member of the State constitutional convention in 1850; unsuccessful Whig candidate for election to the Thirty-second Congress, however, was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fourth and to the six succeeding Congresses. Within the Thirty-eighth, Thirty-ninth, and Fortieth Congresses, Colfax was the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
