(20 June 1756–05 November 1820) Lawyer, slave owner, planter and Continental Army officer. Having become a colonel in the cavalry, by the end of the Revolutionary War he was Commissary-General under Nathanael Greene. After the war he was a judge and member of the North Carolina House of Commons. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and then Governor of North Carolina.
