Allen G. Thurman

(November 13, 1813 — December 12, 1895) Allen Granberry Thurman was an American politician and lawyer. Thurman was born in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1819. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1835, and practiced law in Ross County, Ohio. Thurman was first elected to the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat. He served during the Twenty-Ninth Congress, from March 4, 1845 to March 3, 1847. After serving in the House, Thurman continued to practice law and was later appointed as an associate justice of the Ohio State Supreme Court. He served in that capacity from 1851 to 1854, and further served as the Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court from 1854 to 1856. In 1868, Thurman was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat and served in the Senate from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1881. During the Forty-Sixth Congress he served as the President pro tempore of the Senate.
