(18 September 1733 – 21 September 1798) Lawyer, farmer, slave owner and Continental Congressman. Though he had voted against independence, he signed the declaration and participated in the drafting of the Constitution of Delaware. He was later President of Delaware and delegate to the Constitutional Convention. He later served as served as US Senator and then Chief Justice of Delaware.
