An amendment to the United States Constitution to abolish slavery introduced during the American Civil War.

(16 January, 1815 -- 2 January, 1864) Bowden was an American lawyer and politician. Born in James City County, Va., Bowden studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1838. Bowden participated as a delegate in the State constitutional conventions in 1849 and 1851. Bowden was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1862 and served until his death.
