United States Thirteenth Amendment 1863-65

An amendment to the United States Constitution to abolish slavery introduced during the American Civil War.

(24 February, 1812 – 9 December, 1893) Farwell was an American businessman and lawyer. Born in Waldo County, Maine, he engaged in the manufacture of lime and in shipbuilding and subsequently became a master mariner and trader before studying law and practising in Rockland, Maine. He served as a member of the Maine State Senate from 1853 to 1854 and again from 1861 to 1862, serving the last year as presiding officer. In 1864 he elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Pitt Fessenden and served from October 27, 1864, to March 3, 1865, although not a candidate for reelection in 1865.
