(February 20, 1836 — March 6, 1908) Carpenter was a journalist, lawyer, and public servant. Lewis Carpenter was born in Putnam, Connecticut and began writing at an early age. He worked with New York newspapers for several years before moving to Washington D. C., where he was employed by the Treasury Department. While in D. C., Carpenter studied law at Columbian University (now George Washington University) and was admitted to the bar. He moved to South Carolina in 1867 and continued to work at newspapers. Carpenter was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Robert Elliott. He served in Congress from November 3, 1874 to March 3, 1875.
