(February 6, 1830 — August 9, 1897) William Randall Roberts was a merchant and politician. Roberts was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1830 and immigrated to the United States in 1849. Although he had limited schooling, he worked as a merchant for twenty years, until 1869. Roberts was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives an served from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1875. After serving in Congress, he was appointed to be Minister Plenipotentiary to Chile by the President of the United States and served in that capacity until 1889. Roberts returned to New York City and died there in 1897.
