(October 6, 1825 — November 20, 1902) Sutherland was and lawyer, judge, and politician. Jabez Gridley Sutherland was born in Onondaga County, New York and moved to Michigan in 1848. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1848. He was a member of the State House of Representatives (1853) and a delegate to the State constitutional conventions in 1850 and 1867. From 1863 to 1871, he was judge of the tenth circuit court of Michigan. Sutherland was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873.
