The project’s pioneering multi-media platform will bring together archives, private papers, and oral histories from across the political spectrum to create a rounded view of the context and detail of the peace process.

Twenty-five years on, in the turmoil surrounding Brexit and the collapse of power-sharing once again, “Writing Peace” will illuminate in all its complexity the story of the negotiated peace ushered in by the Agreement.
The project’s pioneering multi-media platform will bring together archives, private papers, and oral histories from across the political spectrum to create a rounded view of the context and detail of the peace process. A unique visualization of the primary source material will immerse users, whether seasoned academics or school children, in the negotiations, enabling a clearer understanding of the hopes and fears of those at the table, as well as the pressure imposed by stakeholders outside the room.
Cutting-edge analytical tools will trace the origins of particular phrases and the developing roles of different individuals and political parties over more than a decade, allowing us to celebrate the full constellation of peace makers involved and helping scholars and practitioners alike to learn lessons for the future.

Project Oversight
Ian McBride is the Foster Professor of Irish History. He oversees the historical research of the project and will ensure that the project engages with other research in this area and draws on the considerable expertise that already exists within Oxford as well as building collaborations with other institutions, particularly on the island of Ireland.
Technical Development
Nicholas couples expertise in constitutional law and history with a track record of delivering digital research projects and international collaborations. As well as providing academic guidance, he is overseeing technical development within Quill to ensure the delivery of the project’s digital outputs.
Resource Access
John Alderdice has provided the project with access to his personal archive, but also shares with us a detailed personal knowledge of the Northern Irish Peace Process and a wealth of connections as we seek to build follow-on research.
Project Manager
Ruth Murray is a project manager and documentary editor on the project. She employs her five years experience of working with Quill to train, manage, and support the student team and to oversee the correct handling of the archival material and construction of the initial model.
Documentary Editor
Annabel Harris is a documentary editor with Quill on the Writing Peace project. She joined Quill in October 2021 and previously worked on the Civil Rights Amendments project. On the editorial team, Annabel constructs the digital model and oversees the work of student researchers.
Documentary Editor
Isha Pareek is a Junior Documentary Editor with the Quill Project. Since joining the Quill team in October 2023, she has been working on the Writing Peace project.
