After admittance to the bar, Saulsbury practiced in Georgetown, Delaware and became the Delaware attorney general from 1850-1855. Saulsbury was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1858 and was reelected in 1864, serving from March 4th, 1859 to March 3rd, 1871.
