(16 January, 1815 -- 2 January, 1864) Bowden was an American lawyer and politician. Born in James City County, Va., Bowden studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1838. Bowden participated as a delegate in the State constitutional conventions in 1849 and 1851. Bowden was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1862 and served until his death. (16 December, 1817 -- 24 October, 1878) Carlile was an American lawyer and politician. Born in Winchester, Va., Carlile studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1840. Carlile participated as a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1850 and was a member of the State senate from 1847 to 1851. Carlile was elected as the candidate of the American Party to the Thirty-fourth Congress and afterwards participated as a delegate to the State secession convention in February 1861. Carlile was elected as a Unionist to the Thirty-seventh Congress, however, only served up and until he was elected as a Unionist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the expulsion of Robert M.T.
