An amendment to the Constitution of the United States that granted citizenship and equal rights, both civil and legal, to Black Americans, including those who had been emancipated by the thirteenth amendment.

Sec. 2.[-e896814] From an[+e896636 -e896814]d after the fourth day of July, in the year one[+e896636 -e896807] thousand eight hundred and seventy-six, no discrimination shall be made by any state, nor by the United States, as to the enjoyment by classes of persons of the right of suffrage, because of race, color, or previous conditi[+e896636]3[+e896807]o[+e896636 -e896807]n of servitude.[+e896636]

Sec. 3. Until the fourth day of July, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-six, no class of persons, as to the right of any of whom to suffrage discrimination shall be made by any state, because of race, color, or previous condition of servi[+e896639]4[+e896807]t[+e896639 -e896807]ud[+e896639]e, shall be included in the basis of representation.[+e896639 -e896800] [-e896800]

No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty or property without due process of law, nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
