Description

The White House announced that Gerry Adams would be permitted to raise funds in the US on behalf of Sinn Féin and that he would be invited to attend the President's St Patrick's Day reception. This aroused widespread criticism from the British government, with John Major refusing to accept a call from Bill Clinton for several days. The two met on 4 April 1995 to repair the damage to relations between the two administrations.
