U.S. Constitutional Convention 1787 (2021 Edition)

(17 September 1739 – 23 July 1800) Lawyer, planter, slave owner, and legislator. Having been a principal figure in the Stamp Act Congress and the Continental Congress, he was elected President and then Governor of South Carolina throughout the Revolutionary War. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, where he chaired the Committee of Detail. He later joined the US Supreme Court but left after a short time. He sought to return as Chief Justice, appointed by Washington, but his criticism of the Jay Treaty meant Congress refused to confirm his nomination.
