Jerome B. Chaffee

The Civil Rights Act of 1875

(April 17, 1825 — March 9, 1886) Chaffee was a teacher, businessman, and politician. Jerome Chaffee was. Born in Niagara County, New York and lived in various places including Missouri and Kansas, before moving to the Territory of Colorado in 1860. He served as a member of the Territorial House of Representatives from 1861 to 1863, where he served as House Speaker for his last year. He is credited as being one of the founders of the city of Denver and he served as President of the First National Bank of Denver from 1865 to 1880. Chaffee was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1875.
