John W. Longyear

United States Fourteenth Amendment & The Civil Rights Act of 1866

(22 October, 1820 -- 11 March, 1875) Longyear was an American lawyer and politician. Born in Shandaken, Ulster County, N.Y., Longyear moved to Michigan in 1844 and studied law. Longyear was admitted to the bar in 1846 and practiced law until he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth and Thirty-ninth Congresses. Later, Longyear participated in Michigan's State constitutional convention in 1867.
