The Road to Civil War

(January 19, 1827 — January 3, 1866) Jacob Kerlin McKenty, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Douglassville, Amity Township, Berks County, Pa., January 19, 1827; was graduated from Yale College in 1848 and from the law department of that college in 1851; was admitted to the bar in 1851 and commenced practice in Reading, Pa.; prosecuting attorney of Berks County 1856-1858; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John Schwartz and served from December 3, 1860, to March 3, 1861; was not a candidate for reelection in 1860; unsuccessful candidate for nomination in 1862 and 1864; resumed the practice of his profession in Reading, Pa.; died in Douglassville, Berks County, Pa., January 3, 1866; interment in St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church Cemetery.
