(December 5, 1821 — December 8, 1890) Samuel Steel Blair, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Indiana, Indiana County, Pa., December 5, 1821; attended the public schools and was graduated from Jefferson College, Canonsburg, Pa., in 1838; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1845 and commenced practice in Hollidaysburg, Blair County, Pa., in 1846; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1856; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses (March 4, 1859-March 3, 1863); chairman, Committee on Private Lands (Thirty-seventh Congress); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1862 to the Thirty-eighth Congress; resumed the practice of law; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1874 to the Forty-fourth Congress; died in Hollidaysburg, Pa., December 8, 1890; interment in the Presbyterian Cemetery.
