(February 25, 1805 — January 3, 1875) Luther Cullen Carter, (Brother of Timothy Jarvis Carter), a Representative from New York; born in Bethel, Maine, February 25, 1805; moved to New York City and engaged in mercantile pursuits; member of the Board of Education of New York City in 1853; retired from business and moved to Long Island City, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1859-March 3, 1861); chairman, Committee on District of Columbia (Thirty-sixth Congress); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1860 to the Thirty-seventh Congress; died in New York City January 3, 1875; interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, N.Y.
