Jason Niles

The Civil Rights Act of 1875

(December 19, 1814 — July 7, 1894) Niles was a teacher, lawyer, judge, and politician. Jason Niles was born in Burlington, Vermont and moved to Mississippi in 1851. He graduated from the University of Vermont and became a teacher in Ohio and Tennessee. Niles studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1851, when he moved to Mississippi. While practicing law in Mississippi, he also served in the State House of Representatives (1870) and as a delegate to the State constitutional conventions in 1851, 1865, and 1868. Before being elected to Congress, Niles was a circuit judge for the thirteenth judicial district from 1871 to 1872. Niles was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1875.
