The Civil Rights Act of 1875

(October 9, 1822 — December 5, 1877) Burleigh was a sailor, businessman, and politician. John Burleigh was born in York County, Maine. As a teenager, Burleigh became a sailor and eventually a commander for foreign voyages between 1846 and 1853. He returned to Maine in 1853 and worked in wool manufacturing and banking. He served as a member of the State House of Representatives (1862, 1864, 1866, 1872) and as a delegate to the Republican National Convention (1864). Burleigh was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1877.
