The Civil Rights Act of 1875

(May 28, 1809 — December 17, 1874) John Blake Rice was a theater performer and manager, and politician. Rice was born in Easton, Maryland in 1809. After receiving limited schooling, he became involved in theater and worked on the stage in New York until moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1847. In Illinois he continued to work in theater, this time as a theater manager. Rice retired from theater and theater management in 1861, after which he served as mayor of Chicago from 1865 to 1869. He was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1873 until his death on December 17, 1874.
