Wilder D. Foster

The Civil Rights Act of 1875

(January 8, 1819 — September 20, 1873) Foster was a businessman and politician. Wilder De Ayr Foster was born in Orange County, New York and he moved to Michigan in 1837. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, Foster worked in the hardware business and served as city treasurer and board of aldermen. He acted as Mayor of Grand Rapids in 1854 and served in the State Senate from 1855 to 1856. Foster was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Thomas Ferry. He served in Congress from December 4, 1871 until his death on September 20, 1873.
