Joseph H. Sloss

The Civil Rights Act of 1875

(October 12, 1826 — January 27, 1911) Sloss was a lawyer and engaged in agriculture. Joseph Sloss was born in Somerville, Alabama, and studied and practiced law in Missouri and Illinois. He served as a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives (1858-1859) and returned to Alabama to serve in the Confederate Army. He was elected to Congress as a Democrat to the Forty-Second and Forty-Third Congresses from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1875.
