The Civil Rights Act of 1875

(January 3, 1824 — September 30, 1870) Smyth was lawyer, judge, and politician. William Smith was born in Eden, Ireland and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1838. He moved to Iowa in 1844, studied law at the University of Iowa and was admitted to the bar in 1847. Smyth was appointed judge of the district court for the fourth judicial district of Iowa in 1853 and worked in that capacity until his resignation in 1857. Additionally, Smyth served as part of the commission to codify and revise the Iowa State laws. He was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1869 until his death in 1870.
