Eugene Casserly

The Civil Rights Act of 1875

(November 13, 1820 — June 14, 1883) Casserly was a journalist and lawyer. Eugene Casserly was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States in 1822 with his parents. He grew up in New York and attended college at Georgetown College, Washington D. C. He went back to New York to practice law and serve as editors of newspapers in the city. He moved to California in 1850 and continued his career as a journalist. He was elected to the Forty-Second and Forty-Third Congresses as a Democrat. He served from March 4, 1869 to November 29, 1873, when he resigned his seat in the Senate.
