"(August 2, 1825 -- March 14, 1884) Alvan Flanders was a(n) machinist, engager in lumber, founder of a newspaper, public servant, officer of the mint, merchant, postmaster, governor, and American politician. He was born in Hopkinton, Merrimack County, New Hampshire and moved to California and then the Territory of Washington. Flanders was a founder of the San Francisco Daily Times, member of the California State House of Representatives (1861), officer of the United States branch Mint (1861), first postmaster of Wallula, Washington, and Governor of the Territory of Washington (April 5, 1869 -1870). Alvan was elected as a Republican to the 40th Congress (March 4, 1867 - March 3, 1869).
