"(September 22, 1824 -- January 9, 1904) Thomas Elliot Stewart was a(n) lawyer, member of a board of education, public servant, park commissioner, and American politician. He was born in New York City. Stewart studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1847. He was a member of the board of education (1854), served in the state assembly (1865 & 1866), member of the Republican State Committee (1866 - 1868), was chairman of the Liberal Republican general committee of New York City (1872), and park commissioner of New York City (1874-1876). Thomas was elected as a Conservative Republican to the 40th Congress (March 4, 1867 - March 3, 1869) and was not reelected.
