Sherman was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fourth and to the three succeeding Congresses. Immediately afterwards, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in order to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Salmon P. Chase. Sherman was reelected once in 1866 and again in 1872. Sherman was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in the Cabinet of President Rutherford Hayes in March 1877. He served in that role until 1881 when he was again elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy of James A. Garfield, who had been elected President of the United States the year previous. Sherman was reelected in 1886 and additionally in 1892.
