Dear Patrick

I arrived at Stormont from London at 4 pm to-day and there had first sight of a document tabled by your delegation to the Talks Committee. This purports to be addressed to the obstacle specified in the first item in Sir Ninian's current work programme and puts forward a number of options.

I confess that I am horrified at the extent to which HMG appears to be according equal validity to proposals which, as you are aware, are entirely unacceptable to Unionists. I have not yet been informed by my team of today's deliberations, and I can only hope that you can see your way to withdrawing the document.

Yours ever,

Jim
