No. 30.

A Proposition Relative to Elections.

Introduced by Mr. Jones of Maricopa.

It is hereby proposed:

Sec. 1. There shall be a general election held every two years for choosing public officers throughout the State, which shall be on the day of choosing representatives in Congress, and at which shall be chosen all State, County, District and other Elective Officers.

Sec. 2. The officers chosen at the general election shall hold for a term of two years, and until their respective successors are chosen and qualified; such term to begin on the first Monday after the first day of January following their election.

Sec. 3. No public officer shall be chosen at any other than the general election, except the Legislature by general law may provide for special elections to fill vacancies; and elections for other purposes may be held at such times as may be provided by law.

Sec. 4. Justices of the Supreme Court, Judges of the District and Probate Court, Justices of the Peace, and Corporation Commissioners shall be voted for by separate ballot, containing names of all the candidates for such offices, and not used for any other purposes. The names of the candidates for the said several offices shall be printed in groups on the ballot and the names in each group shall be in alphabetical order preceded by a statement indicating the office for which those in such groups are candidates and with nothing from which the politics of any candidate can be ascertained appearing on the ballot.

Sec. 5. A Justice of the Supreme Court, Judge of the District or Probate Court, Justice of the Peace or Corporation Commissioner who was chosen at the last preceding general election may become a candidate for re-election without being nominated in any manner therefor; and his name shall be printed on the ballot as such candidate for the office upon his written request; such request being filed at least thirty days before the day of election in the same office where nomination of the other candidates for such office are filed.
