Meeting to discuss the business of the Forum
That this Forum
deplores the orchestrated violence which followed the lawful and peaceful Orange walk in Portadown on 6 July;
supports the Chief Constable's decision to permit the parade in Portadown to return along its traditional route but is dismayed at aspects of his statement setting out his reasons for granting permission;
calls for the fundamental rights of freedom of assembly and procession to be upheld and for article 7 of the Public Order (Northern Ireland) Order 1987 to be enforced;
recognizes the basic flaw in the legislation which permits the use or threat of violence to dictate whether a lawful parade proceeds or not;
condemns the interference of the Dublin Government in the internal affairs of Northern Ireland, which is provocative and which serves to escalate tension in the community.
