Metric System Letter of Request

There is 1 proposed amendment related to this document on which a decision has not been taken.

Salt Lake City Utah March 23rd, 1895.

Hon. C. C. Goodwin,

City.

Dear Sir:

I observe with regret the opposition manifested to the adoption of the Metric System for the new State of Utah.

We should bear in mind that it is used exclusively by Mexico and all South American Republics. Even the System is used in the making of estimates for excavation, fills, etc., for construction of the Nicaragua Canal by the American Company.

It is largely made use of in the United States. It is exclusively used in continental Europe.

With the completion of the Pan American Railway System, the commerce of this Country will demand its adoption. Situated as we will be in the gate way of this contemplated highway, why not be prepared in advance to at least make use of the system of Weights and Measures (excepting land) that manifest destiny will enforce upon us.

I can see but little difficulty that would arise from its adoption, if we except the measurement of land alone. This, owing to the present system of Surveys would no doubt cause us some trouble and annoyance.

Trusting that the Convention will give the matter favorable consideration, I am

Yours very respectfully,

J C Dooly
